Computer Graphics
Computer graphics is a half year introductory class to the wonderful world of computer generated graphic arts.
The Elements of Design
First classes will focus on design principals .
Vocabulary :
Proportion, Scale, Balance, Rhythm & Repetition, Proximity, Line, Form, Closure, Size, Color, Texture, Negative & Positive space, and Typography.
Lesson one:
Line
Project:
Exploring line. using Adobe Illustrator
Create a canvas 8.5 x 11 and explore the possibilities of Line as discussed in class.
Some types of lines... Fat, Thin, Long,Short, Dark,Light Strait, Curved, Wavy,
Lesson two:
Geometric Shape
Project:
Create a interesting design using principals of design with your Geometric Shape.
Lesson three:
Organic Shape
Project:
Create a interesting design using principals of design with your Organic Shape.
Lesson Four:
Introduction to Color
Color Theory,
Hue, Value Intensity, Tint, Tone, Shade, Neutral Gray
Vocabulary:
Reflective, transmitted, color temperature ,Warm colors, cool colors, Monochromatic,Primary colors, Secondary, Tertiary,Analogous, Harmonious Color Schemes, Complementary.
Project:
Using your organic shape, introduce one of the primary colors. be creative by changing the transparency but keep your design Mono Chromatic.
Project:
Again using your organic shape add additional color using an analogous color.
Lesson five:
Introduction to Serif - Fonts
Thousands of fonts are available to creatively use free on the internet and within your creative software.
By using artistic tools such as line, texture, composition, negative and positive space, and color as previously discussed
you can combine with verbal with visual to create your designs.
Project:
Using your initials create a design on a 8.5 x 11 using as many fonts as you can. Keep the design monochromatic.
Project:
In class you were assigned an "Action" word
Using your Word create a design on a 8.5 x 11 canvas using interesting fonts that conveys your action to your viewer.
Project:
Design your own personal Logo / App
Your logo should also fit into the square format of an app.
make your logo 6" x 6" Using your knowledge of design, color and text / fonts.
Project:
After looking at and analyzing dozens of business cards, create your own personal business card using your logo and other important information.
Project:
Create an Ad for the news papers
Card Swap
You will create an ad for one of the other students in the class
It will be a news paper ad.
It should contain the logo of the other student of which they will e-mail to you.
the ad is to be 8 X 10" in size and can be in color or black and white you decide.
Project:
Write a book....Tell and illustrate a personal story.
From your personal experience or family history make/write a 12 page book plus a cover and title page .
(minimum of 14 8 1/2 x 11 pages )
The story can be illustrated with using your drawings, or photographs you take (even with your cell phone camera) or old family photos scanned in in class.
Project:
Create a poster for a non profit of your choice. You may use their logo but you must design everything else. The final size is to be 13 x 19 but the proof is to be printed on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
Designing a Logo or App tag.
Students will use their above designs to inspire an individual logo that reflects their identity. From this design they will experiment with composition, figure ground, and texture.
After the design is complete the students will start to experiment with Text. and its relationship to their visual designs.
First classes will focus on design principals .
