This course is designed for those students with little or no experience in photography. The student at the end of the course will be able to predict what happens when the subject in front of the camera is translated through the mechanism of the lens and film into an image, discover what happens when these images are viewed by them and others, and be aware of the diversity of applications of photography.
The following information will be covered in order to confront the above problems : The camera, Light sensitive material, exposure, film processing, print making and finishing, print response and judgement. This information will be introduced in a series of exploratory exercises that increase in difficulty and organized in a personal journal reflecting students' achievements. Periodic exhibition of students work will be required.
- Photograms.
Camera-less images
First roll
For your first roll of film you will investigate some basic elements of the photographic process. Light sensitive material reacts to light recording its interpretation of our environment. Sometimes reveling life, as we know it sometimes distorting the truth in long deep abstracts. The viewfinder sets a stage in which we can capture a moment of life. We the artist can create a canvas allowing our viewer to see our interpretations of a place, a thing or an event.
For your first roll you will investigate your environment using the above thoughts by shooting images that are of:
1. Patterns of light and shadow
2. Your Reflection
3. A person about 4-6 feet away ( their face should be placed in either of the 4 corners not in the center)
You should make 4 different images of each of the above. If there is any film left revisit any of the above assignments you wish.
The assignment should be done away from school. Look for interesting places and subjects.
Have fun!

" My Third Roll of Film"
For your third image making experience you will be investigating some artistic devices that fine art photographers have used since the birth of photography in the mid 1800's 1. Depth The invention of the camera obscure in the 1400's led to the understanding of perspective. The illusion of things getting smaller and the horizon rising as it goes back in space. Your assignment is to find or create situations where you can creatively show how photography can be used as a tool to create images with tremendous depth. 2. Frame within a Frame The use of a camera automatically establishes a frame. You the artist can choose to include or not include information within this frame, this is your esthetic decision. A tool many artists have used is a frame within a frame to help enhance their composition. Finding a frame like a window, a door, an arch way, and so on helps add depth and interest to the composition. 3. Self Portrait Since the beginning of time artists have used themselves as subjects for their work. Artists working in every medium have practiced the "Self Portrait" photography is no exception. Recently in the past few years due to the popularity of the I-phone and social medium "selfies" have become popular, but not taken seriously. Your assignment is to make a self portrait. Through this experience I want you to investigate yourself as the artist/subject and your relationship to your environment as expressed in your photograph. you may have an assistant push the shutter for you if needed but you must set the stage. Project: Together we will select 2 of your best images to be enlarged and mounted on matte board for display. |
